Even in a “rich, industrialized country” there are those who go hungry everyday. Food banks provide the most basic of needs for all who use their services, including families and children. As part of our December drive, we’re collecting non-perishable food items for the Toronto Daily Bread Food Bank. If you’re in the Toronto area, please visit one of our 6 store locations where you can drop-off a food donation. Working Two-gether:** To double the power of your donations, Transat Electronics will match every food donation kilogram-for-kilogram ** Some of the most needed items:

For every online and phone order made through our website during the month of December, we will donate $2 to a charity/non-profit organization. We’re asking our site visitors to vote on their top picks for charity/non-profit organization. The two with the most votes at the end of the month will receive a donation from Transat Electronics. Unfortunately we cannot give to all charities, and there are many more charities than listed here. Please take the time to learn more about them… Organizations we donated to…

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights to be respected and protected for everyone. We believe human rights abuses anywhere are the concern of people everywhere. So, outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world, we work to improve people’s lives through campaigning and international solidarity. Our mission is to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated. Our members and supporters exert influence on governments, political bodies, companies and intergovernmental groups. Activists take up human rights issues by mobilizing public pressure through mass demonstrations, vigils and direct lobbying as well as online and offline campaigning. www.amnesty.org

Kiva’s mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva is the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. The people you see on Kiva’s site are real individuals in need of funding - not marketing material. When you browse entrepreneurs’ profiles on the site, choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan, you are helping a real person make great strides towards economic independence and improve life for themselves, their family, and their community. Throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments. Then, when you get your loan money back, you can relend to someone else in need. www.kiva.org

And we want to make sure that it’s there for you to see next year, and in 5 years, and 10, and for your children… and for your grandchildren. Back in 1961 when it was founded, WWF stood for the “World Wildlife Fund”. However, as the organization grew over the 70s and into the 80s, WWF began to expand its work to conserve the environment as a whole (reflecting the interdependence of all living things), rather than focusing on selected species in isolation. www.wwf.org
